Based at Murihiku Marae, Waihōpai rūnaka’s purpose is to provide a multi-functional cultural centre and to be a key service provider for their community. This project involved the demolition of all existing buildings on site with the exception of the wharenui, and a complete rebuild of a modern fit-for-purpose marae building together with some papakainga (to provide on-site accommodation for kaumatua).
As the Project Lead SGL has worked alongside the rūnaka from day one, helping to complete a facility feasibility, secure government and other public funding, appoint the design team, chair the Project Steering Group, guide cash flow management, oversee procurement, and to provide project leadership and support to keep the rūnaka and project safe at all times. The facility is on track to open in early 2023.
